If Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here by Anna Breslaw does not have you laughing out loud, curled up on the couch at 1 a.m. madly flipping pages as you speed-read toward conclusion, then maybe you should see a doctor. This book’s a prescription for a guaranteed good time. It’s full of witty, clever dialogue, pop-culture references, and–in my favorite passage–a quick succession of gardening puns. (Ah, pun humor, you either love it or hate it.)
Scarlett is a high school nobody with a 2-point-something GPA. Her best friend, Avery, is awesome. The rest of Scarlett’s friends are online in her fanfiction forum for “Lycanthrope High.” When “Lycanthrope High” is canceled on television, Scarlett reevaluates her circumstances. She takes a big risk and tries to ask her forever-crush Gideon out, but ends up saying all the wrong things, prompting Gideon to prove to Scarlett that he is a helluv a lot cooler than her.
