Never Said by Carol Lynch Williams is a short but powerful story about twin teenagers named Sarah and Annie who rebuild their relationship when they hit rock bottom. Sarah has an anxiety disorder and has just been dumped by her longtime boyfriend Garret. Annie has shaved her head, gained 45 lbs., and had a major personality change. The worst part is their parents are in denial that the twins need serious help.
As one of those adults you hear about who reads YA, it seemed obvious to me why Annie was gaining weight, but I couldn’t pinpoint the exact specifics. Williams kept the details a mystery until the closing chapters.
Never Said is told between Sarah and Annie’s alternate points of view and the Annie chapters are in poems. That makes for a low-word-count book which could definitely appeal to reluctant readers as well as bibliophiles. I hope Never Said finds its way into high school classrooms because I think teens would love it.
P.S. I received a free copy of this book from BookLook bloggers in exchange for my honest opinion and review.
