“Dorothy Must Die” by Danielle Paige

After an epic long wait on the holds list of my local library, I finally got my hands on Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige, and then consumed the book in twenty-four hours.

Dorothy Must Die is YA meets a very dark and scary version of L. Frank Baum’s classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (which, by the way, you can download for free on your Kindle.)

In Paige’s version, Dorothy is still leading Oz and has become a power-hungry monster. The only person who can stop her is an ordinary girl named Amy who blows in from Kansas on the latest tornado. Amy is recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked and trained to kill.

In addition to a fast paced plot, the character development in this book is superb. Indigo the Munchkin, Ollie the flying monkey, Nox the mysterious bad boy, and even Star the rat seem very real. There is a major twist about one of the characters at the end of the book that will shock you.

I have not read any of the prequels, but I am definitely going to add the new sequel coming out to my future reading list. I can’t wait to find out what happens in The Wicked Will Rise!
