Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is “X Men” meet “Cinderella.” Silver bloods have god-like powers. Red bloods are normal. The main character Mare discovers she has powers too–even though she is Red. The book jacket describes this happening during a “a twist of fate.”
That twist of fate was extremely dramatic. In the course of twenty four hours Mare goes from ______ to _______ and it’s shocking. I can’t say any more without revealing spoilers, but wow.
On a parental note, YA fiction Red Queen is very “clean” and entirely appropriate for a middle school library. This is a big deal because there are many young kids out there who want to read the “Hunger Games” or “Divergent” and their parents won’t let them. But as a mother, I don’t see anything in Red Queen that gives me qualms about my ten-year-old son encountering.
